A TRUE WORK IN PROGRESS
I ran into a problem. Just
a small one. A year into designing typefaces, I had completed a
face based on work I did several years back. I was proud of it and
christened it a truly unique nameor so I thought. It turns
out, despite my early efforts to check the validity of the name,
it was already taken. I never intended to take an existing name.
The face's name was quickly changed and no harm doneexcept
to my professional pride.
In my rantings, I wished
there was a place I could go to check a catalog of faces and names
to make sure I wasn't infringing on a name or name-style combo.
Checking with my contemporaries and type professionals I truly admired,
my idea was met with encouragement, disbelief, and critical suggestions.
The result is before you.
I hope the typecodex evolves into the resource it was intended to
become.
SPECIAL THANKS
Two people helped more than
I could ever expect. For that, I will be forever grateful. Silas
Dilworth, of T-26 helped fuel my initial ideas and form the gui
of results codex. Matt Jones, a true web god and friend took my
design and ideas and turn it into a working tool. Thanks to them,
period.
And, thanks to every foundry,
distributor and designer who contributes.
